A tradition of success
Basketball is one of John Paul College’s leading sports. Over the years, our teams have achieved outstanding success winning the National Schools Boys’ Championships in 2002, 2003 and 2005 and the National Schools Girls’ Championships in 2002, 2003, 2007, 2010 and 2011. John Paul College is one of the few schools across Australia who has been presented with an award by Basketball Australia acknowledging the school's consistent attendance and performance within the National Schools Tournament.
Our John Paul College Girls' Team won the Gold Medal in 2010 and 2011 at the National Schools Basketball Tournament in Bendigo. The National Schools Basketball Tournament is the highest level of competition in Australia for junior players. Both the John Paul College Boys and Girls teams have enjoyed a long successful relationship with the tournament and will continue to be a part of this prestigious event long into the future.
With the success at a National level has also come success at the State level in Queensland. The John Paul College Boys program have secured the State title in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and in 2007. The Girls State title has been secured no less than ten times with the most recent being back-to-back state title wins in 2009, 2010 and 2011.
The College has also produced numerous National, State and Regional representatives. Many alumni from the College currently play in the professional competitions of basketball in Australia and across the globe.
What makes John Paul College different?
Basketball at John Paul College is driven by a desire to provide the best schools basketball program in Australia. This can be seen through a number of exciting opportunities students have to improve their basketball technical and tactical skills. The College participates in a number of competitions, development programs and initiatives to help our students reach their full potential.
Basketball is a great life-long sport. Both boys and girls are able to start playing as juniors and continue throughout their time at school, and beyond to eventually play at a professional level.
Years 8 -12 play in The Associated Schools (TAS) competition. The Girls' competition is held during Term 1 and 2, while the Boys' competition is played during Terms 3 and 4. The TAS competition involves regular weekly games against other schools in the Greater Brisbane region.
Club Basketball at John Paul College
For students who wish to play additional games, John Paul College also provides a club-based competition through our local association with Logan Basketball Inc. Club games run all year including Terms 1, 2, 3 and 4.
All of these great school and community based sporting competitions are underpinned by numerous development programs designed to work on the individual and team concepts important to the College's basketball pathways.
