Cyber Safety - we are serious

Developing digital literacy skills and ensuring student safety in a connected world is something the College takes seriously. The College has already introduced a Cyber Safety Officer and cyber safe policies to build awareness of cyber safety issues as well as to promote responsible use of technology. The SecureEd system now adds a further layer of protection to this digital community.

The SecurED system will, in the future, analyse all internet and email traffic within the school, and if cyber bullying activity is detected, the school is alerted immediately.  Each of the school’s 2000 laptop computers will have the SecurED Laptop Protector installed so that when the laptops are taken outside the school, they are still protected in the same way.  Thus if a student were to cyber bully another student on Facebook, using their school laptop at home, SecurED will detect it, block the offending words and alert the school the instant it occurs.

The College is widely recognised as a leader in education and enjoys an international reputation for the innovativeness of its technology program and the breadth and depth of K – 12 teaching and learning experiences.

Use of technology is routine at John Paul College. Each student from Years 4 – 12 uses a personal laptop and accesses online student workspaces as an integral part of their day-to-day life as a school student.

Kathryn Priol, Director of ICT at John Paul College said SecurED will enable John Paul College to protect a student in a way that simply was not possible before.

“The chances of a cyber bullying incident occurring will now be greatly reduced, which is reassuring for students, staff and parents,” she said.
