This programme identifies students with emerging talent and partners them with professional sports coaches to guide their development.
These specialist coaches work with them during sport and recreation lessons, teaching technique and encouraging them to pursue their sporting goals.
The Horizons programme at John Paul College supports exceptionally talented athletes in their pursuit of sporting and academic excellence.
Horizons is suitable for Senior School students who have attained state or national representation level in their chosen sport. It is designed to enable them to manage the additional demands of elite training and competition by spreading their academic studies over three years instead of two. Our intention is that neither athletic nor academic achievement should be compromised and that students should not be over stressed by competing demands.
Students who wish to apply for this programme must demonstrate high motivation to achieve both academic and sporting goals. Their academic reports must reflect a genuine commitment their studies.
Our Horizons students are also supported by specialist coaches and health and fitness professionals including physiotherapists, sports psychologists and personnel from the Acceleration Australia program. The programme also has links with all State sporting bodies, the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) and the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS).
Horizons students are regular inclusions in QAS and AIS teams and development squads. The results to date have been exceptional with a number of students having received scholarships to respected universities in the United States, and selected in national sporting teams and winning AIS scholarships.
