Our Year 1 classrooms embrace the inquiry-based philosophy of the PYP. Students don’t just memorise facts, they learn how to ask questions, think critically and explore big ideas. Through transdisciplinary units of inquiry, students make connections between subjects and the real world, developing a deeper understanding of themselves and their community.

From hands-on activities to collaborative projects, Year 1 at JPC offers opportunities to explore, create and grow. Our learning environments are designed to encourage independence, imagination and joyful learning.
 
A highlight of the year is the Sharing the Planet unit of inquiry, where students explore Australian habitats through a cross-curricular design project. This culminates in the Year 1 Animal Expo, where they proudly present their work to the community, showcasing their creativity and growing confidence.

Beyond the Classroom: Co-​curr​icular Opportunities

Our Year 1 students enjoy a vibrant range of programs that build physical development, creativity and teamwork:
  • Performing Arts: Students can join the Primary Choir or explore Cheer and Dance Programs, building confidence and coordination while participating in school events and competitions.
  • Sports and Activities: Junior Development Sports Programs include basketball, AFL, rugby, hockey, cricket and netball, alongside partner programs in swimming, football and tennis.
  • Digital Creativity: Later in the year, students can explore technology and innovation through our Coding Club.
As students progress through the Primary years, even more co-curricular opportunities become available, allowing them to develop their talents and interests further.
