With the Paris 2024 Olympics underway, I wish to share one of the many inspiring stories from the Olympics, especially the lessons we can learn from these stories. The Barcelona 1992 Olympics gave the world a powerful moment of inspiration through the story of British sprinter Derek Redmond. Competing in the 400 metre race, Redmond's journey became legendary not for the race itself but for his remarkable display of determination and the human spirit.

Derek was a favourite to win a medal in Barcelona. With high hopes, he started strong in the semifinals. But as he sprinted to the semifinal, tragedy struck: a sudden tear in his hamstring brought him crashing to the ground in intense pain. The race continued without him, but Derek was not ready to give up. As medical personnel rushed towards him, he pushed them away and got back on his feet. Limping and struggling, he was determined to finish the race he had started.

In one of the most emotional moments in Olympic history, Derek’s father, Jim, broke through security to reach his son. With tears streaming down his face, Jim supported Derek, and together, they continued down the track. The 65,000 spectators rose to their feet, applauding and cheering them on. Father and son crossed the finish line together, not as victors in the race but as heroes of the human spirit. You can watch this inspirational moment here: Derek Redmond at Barcelona 1992

Derek Redmond did not win a medal that day, but he won something far more significant: the respect and admiration of millions worldwide. His story is a testament to the power of perseverance, the importance of support and the indomitable strength of the human spirit. The message behind Derek Redmond's story is clear and timeless. It’s not about how you start or whether you finish first but about having the courage to continue when everything seems lost. Derek’s determination to complete the race, despite excruciating pain and overwhelming odds, serves as a reminder that true success lies in resilience and the refusal to give up, no matter the obstacle.

I look forward to watching the many inspiring stories from the Olympics with the rest of the world. We congratulate JPC Alumni Genevieve Gregson (née LaCaze) (Class of 2007), Kristy Wallace (Class of 2013) and Angela Yu (Class of 2021) for their selection on the Australian Olympic team bound for the Paris 2024 Olympics. We also congratulate Dr Janine Dwyer (Class of 1986), who will be heading to Paris again as the Australian Para-Equestrian Team's veterinarian. We look forward to cheering them on and celebrating their successes.
