Don’t allow people to dim your shine because they are blinded. Tell them to put on sunglasses.

Term Four started with our 40th Annual Speech Night, as always, we were entertained by the exceptional ensemble, choral and dance pieces, and many awards! One of the highlights of the evening was hearing from Alumnus and first College Captain and Dux, Professor Craig Munns. Professor Munns offered this advice to our students:

‘If you want to make big decisions, if you want to hear what you are called to do and who you are called to be, you need to stop, skim away what clouds our thoughts and prevents you from hearing our desires, and listen, really listen. You may need guidance along that journey, I know I did.  You may wish to talk to mentors, friends or even parents. Do what the founders of John Paul College did and surround yourself with people who are positive influences and people who support you. Be open to unexpected opportunities. Take risks. Be ambitious. Care for others and look to serve. Find what you are called to do and who you are called to be, and your legacy will be great.’

In these last few weeks of Term Four, our thoughts turn to our graduating Year Twelve students. As they culminate their John Paul College journey with a sense of anticipation and excitement, we wish them well in their future endeavours.

Like all journeys, each student started with a single step. This single step was taken with the same anticipation and excitement and as they grew, so did their character with each triumph and calamity, resiliently faced. I am immensely proud of this year's group. I wish them well with their final exams, and with whatever path they follow in the future. As we look forward to our Valedictory week events; the Service at St John’s Cathedral and final breakfast and assembly – our graduating Year Twelve’s are sure to shine bright.
