SOAR - Fourth Edition
Setting forth on a bold journey that blends heritage and entrepreneurship, Cory Reeve embraced his family business and is taking it to new heights. Through his visionary beverage business ventures, Cory is carving a path that not only influences the business world but also uplifts the lives of Indigenous Australians. Cory entered JPC as a 12 year old with dreams of a bright future. He recalls with affection the friendships forged with classmates and the joy he derived from participating in sports at the College. Cory’s athletic talents were highlighted in cricket where he excelled and secured a spot in the Cricket A Team through Years 8 to 10, before joining the First XI Cricket team during his final two years. Rugby and football also caught his interest as he explored different sports. These experiences instilled in Cory the values of teamwork and perseverance that would guide him throughout his life. Cory attributes his strong work ethic and drive for success to his parents. “My parents had their own spring water business and worked really hard to give my sister and I the opportunity to receive a good education and upbringing,” he shares. Inspired by their example, Cory developed a keen interest in pursuing an apprenticeship during his final years of schooling, deviating from his initial aspiration of becoming an accountant. After completing TAFE studies in electrical and refrigeration, Cory faced a choice between an apprenticeship position or joining his family’s business. Opting for the latter, he spent 15 years learning about the spring water industry, gaining invaluable knowledge and contributing to its growth. Seeking a new challenge, Cory embarked on an entrepreneurial journey alongside his partner Tomika Johnson, who has Indigenous heritage, to establish the Waddi Group, an Indigenous company that has become one of Australia’s largest spring water and speciality coffee businesses. This endeavour opened his eyes to a fresh perspective on business and life, and fostered a deep appreciation for Indigenous heritage. The Waddi Group now counts among its clientele prominent mining and corporate sectors in Australia such as Cater Care in QLD and NSW airports, BMD Group (a Brisbane-based national civil company), Fortescue Metals Group, BHP, Rio Tinto, Compass Group and Shell Australia to name a few. Now many years beyond his 12 year old self, Cory dreams of continuous growth for the Waddi Group, striving to provide employment opportunities for Indigenous Australians and to strengthen partnerships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. With five Indigenous employees in vital roles including delivery driving, general management and administration in Perth, the Waddi Group actively creates an inclusive and supportive workplace environment. Cory has aspirations for his brainchild beyond its corporate goals. The Waddi Group collaborates with Indigenous and non-Indigenous corporations such as Brian Kearle’s Bounce Back program in basketball, Noosa Pirates Junior Rugby League and First Swing Golf, to empower children through sports. Cory’s accomplishments are exceptional. His significant impact on the Indigenous business landscape showcases the powerful effect that passion and opportunity can have. As he embraces the challenges and joys that lie ahead, Cory remains dedicated to creating positive change in the business world and the lives of Indigenous Australians through Waddi Group and Waddi Water.
