Mathematics

Mathematics not only instils in students problem-solving skills but also encourages creative thinking and critical reasoning, all fundamental skills for the future.

Mathematics develops the numeracy capabilities that all students need in their personal, work, and civic life, as well as providing the fundamentals on which mathematical specialties and professional applications are built.

The Mathematics curriculum at JPC aims to ensure that students:
  • are confident, creative users and communicators of mathematics, able to investigate, represent and interpret situations
  • develop an increasingly sophisticated understanding of mathematical concepts and fluency with processes, able to pose and solve problems and reason in number and algebra, statistics and probability, and measurement and geometry
  • recognise the connections between the areas of Mathematics and other disciplines, appreciating Mathematics as an accessible and enjoyable discipline to study and;
  • provides pathway options suitable for students of differing abilities and interests, and a range of future career and study plans.

In Years 11 and 12, students have the option to undertake the following courses:
  • General Mathematics – designed for students who want to extend their mathematical skills beyond Year Ten but whose future studies or employment pathways do not require calculus
  • Mathematical Methods – enables students to see the connections between mathematics and other areas of the curriculum and apply their mathematical skills to real-world problems, becoming critical thinkers, innovators and problem-solvers
  • Specialist Mathematics – designed for students who develop confidence in their mathematical knowledge and ability, and gain a positive view of themselves as mathematics learners and;
  • Essential Mathematics – benefits students because they develop skills that go beyond the traditional ideas of numeracy with an emphasis on estimation, problem-solving and reasoning, which develops students into thinking citizens.
