Student Leadership
We have a progressive and dynamic student leadership program that is based on a servant leadership model.
Students are encouraged to explore and develop leadership roles and are encouraged to build on their leadership skills through involvement in councils, committees and by applying for formal leadership positions.
Every student of the College is considered a leader, representing the College through their actions, role modelling and service to others on a daily basis.
To provide students with opportunities to grow and develop their leadership skill set, we have a number of elected, and volunteer positions within the Secondary School.
Leadership positions include:
Years 8 - 11
Year Level Representatives
Each cohort in the Secondary School will have two Year Level Representatives (male and female) who make up part of the Secondary Student Council. Students in the Student Council work alongside our School Captains and represent the student body.
Class Representatives
Each Academic Welfare class also has two student representatives per term who work alongside Academic Mentors (AW) and Heads of Year.
Team Mates
As part of our House System, students in each year level will be given the opportunity to take up ‘Team Mate’ roles, supporting the Secondary House Captains at carnivals and other College house events. Students are encouraged to participate and build unity amongst the houses.
Year 12
College Captains
College Captains are selected senior student representatives with a responsibility to lead students of John Paul College. College Captains work alongside staff, students and school leadership to lead and support our students. College Captains are selected by students and staff and play a crucial role in leading our College. They are the public face of the students and the College.
Vice Captains
Vice Captains are representatives of the student body. They are allocated special responsibilities to different areas of the school. Vice Captains are selected by students and staff. There are two Vice Captains for each of the following:
- Vice Captains with special responsibility to Primary School
- Vice Captains with special responsibility to Years 7 - 9
- Vice Captains with special responsibility to Years 10 - 12
- Vice Captains with special responsibility to John Paul International College
- Vice Captains with special responsibility to Boarding.
House Captains
Each house has two House Captains who are responsible for leading their respective Houses and ‘Team Mates’ in House events throughout the year. Students work alongside the House Patrons (staff members), the Head of Sport and Activities, and the Head of Performing Arts Co-curricular).
Prefects
Prefects are selected as student representatives and leaders among the student body. Prefects perform various duties to support the students within our College and are selected by students and staff at the College. The duties include:
- being loyal to the college and college captains
- carrying out rostered duties on the campus with teaching staff
- contributing to Open Days as requested
- wearing the appropriate uniform in an exemplary manner.
Class Mates
Student Class Mates are assigned to each year level and are responsible for working with their nominated cohort to support students. Class Mates visit year levels and classes throughout the term and support students through their school journey. Class Mates are volunteers who provide support for all year levels within the College.
Alongside formal leadership positions, we provide countless opportunities for students across the Secondary School to show leadership in our day-to-day school lives. From co-curricular captains to volunteering in our Community Care groups, we have countless opportunities for students to grow their leadership portfolio and skillset in their areas of interest and passion.
