At the end of May, we celebrated Queensland Health and Physical Education (HPE) Week, which saw the HPE staff, with the support of the House Captains, run several activities throughout the week to highlight the important role that Health and Physical Education play in everybody's lives.
Students in the middle school competed against each other in a game of Endzone. Splitting the teams into boys against the girls, the girls dominated the game easily, allowing a comfortable win. Tuesday was Dodgeball which has traditionally been a very well attended event, and this year was no different. Dozens of students from Years Seven to Twelve faced off against the HPE staff and House Captains, and despite being heavily outnumbered, the staff and House Captains triumphed 3-2 in a closely fought contest.
Wednesday and Thursday focused on individual events, including the beep test and gym records. Many students turned up to test their individual limits, with gym records being especially popular. This year saw an unprecedented 18 out of a possible 64 records being broken.
As good as the week had been to this point, it was all a build-up to the big event on Friday which was the traditional staff vs House Captains Futsal match. With a member of the Brisbane Roar youth team on the House Captains side, they were always going to be a handful for the staff. The House Captains raced to a 2-0 lead in the early exchanges, wasting no time. Gaining composure as the game wore on, the staff recorded two quick goals in the closing passages of the first half to lock it up at 2-2. Following the momentum built, the staff recorded their third goal early in the second, only for the House Captains to respond quickly, locking it up at 3-3.
With only a couple of minutes left on the clock, the staff executed what could have been the decisive play of the game by scoring and forging ahead by one point. With the seconds clicking down and desperation building, the House Captains, managed to scramble home a goal with only seconds left, making the score at the end of regulation 4-4. Unhappy with a draw, a penalty shootout was used to split the two sides. The first attempts from both teams were expertly saved, meaning we had to go to a second and final attempt. The staff team went first and sent the attempt just wide of the post. With the game on the line, Riley Gill stepped up to take the House Captains' attempt and true to form, expertly sent the attempt past the keeper and into the back of the net to secure the win. It has been a long time coming, but with the win, the House Captains have finally clawed back the coveted Staff vs House Captains Cup… at least until next year.
Thank you to all students who participated and to all the staff and House Captains for your contribution to making the week so successful!
