I hope this message finds you and your loved ones safe and well.
Due to the current extreme conditions resulting in considerable debris around the campus, and with the safety of our community as our highest priority, John Paul College will be closed on Monday, 10 March. This will allow a thorough clean-up of the campus. We encourage all families to take extreme care and prioritise their wellbeing during this time.
Our thoughts are with everyone who may have been impacted, and we sincerely hope that your family is safe. If your household has been affected by the cyclone, please get in touch with us so we can provide any necessary support as you plan for a safe return to the College.
College Operations
At this stage, we can advise the following:
- Year 10 immunisations scheduled for Monday have been postponed, and a new date will be communicated shortly.
- Co-curricular is cancelled for Monday.
- The Years 3 to 6 Swimming Carnival, scheduled for Tuesday 11 March, has been postponed. A new date will be confirmed and communicated shortly.
- At this stage, NAPLAN testing will commence on Wednesday morning as per our previous schedule. Make-up sessions will be provided for any student who cannot attend a session due to disruptions from Cyclone Alfred.
Further updates will be provided as required, and we appreciate your understanding as we navigate these challenging circumstances.

Update: Wednesday 5 March 2025, 11.30am
Following advice from the Queensland Government in response to Tropical Cyclone Alfred, John Paul College will be closed from Thursday 6 March, until Sunday 9 March. The safety and wellbeing of our students, staff and families remain our highest priority, and this decision has been made with great care to ensure everyone stays safe during this time.
Co-curricular activities for Performing Arts, Sports and Activities, as well as extra-curricular activities, will be cancelled on Wednesday 5 March, from 3.15pm.
Primary School students who are not collected will be taken to Outside School Hours Care. Outside School Hours Care will be open until 6.00pm, but we encourage our families to collect their children at the end of the school day.
Secondary School and JPIC students who are not collected by 3.30pm will be supervised at the Gorman Centre until they are collected.
College bus transport remains unchanged today for students who travel via bus.
We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as more information becomes available and the College reopens. In the meantime, we encourage all community members to follow the advice of local emergency services and take necessary precautions to stay safe.
College Operations During Closure
From Thursday 6 March, until Sunday 9 March, all College operations will be suspended, including:
- All Primary, Secondary and JPIC Operations
- Early Learning Centre
- Outside School Hours Care (OSHC)
- Co-curricular activities
- Extra-curricular activities with external providers.
Boarding and Homestay operations will continue, with additional information to follow for boarding and homestay families.

JPC OPEN TODAY | JPC is open today, Wednesday 5 March. The Sports and Activities Team will contact families about any changes to co-curricular programs. We have cancelled any extra-curricular from external providers, they will contact you if cancelled. We will keep updating you on any campus closures.
Update: Tuesday 4 March 2025, 2.20pm
We continue to monitor Tropical Cyclone Alfred and its potential impact on Logan and the South East Queensland region closely. At this stage, the Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting that Tropical Cyclone Alfred will cross the coast north of Brisbane on Thursday or Friday, bringing with it heavy to intense rainfall, damaging winds and flooding.
As per our disaster management protocol, we always follow the advice of emergency services. We will continue to monitor the weather conditions and take action where necessary to ensure the safety of staff, students and the wider community.
Current College OperationsNo decision on school closures has yet been made. But if conditions make attending or commuting to and from the College unacceptably hazardous for our students, families, and staff, we will, at that point, decide to close the campus until safer conditions return. All College operations currently remain unchanged, and we urge staff to stay informed through official College communication channels.

Event UpdatesThe following events will be rescheduled due to the predicted weather conditions:
- The Parents of JPC AGM on this evening will be postponed to Wednesday 19 March.
- The Prospective Director Information Evening is rescheduled to Wednesday 12 March.
- All TAS, Junior TAS and Shield Sport Fixtures against St Pauls on Saturday have been cancelled.
- Netball trials on Saturday will be rescheduled.

We are closely monitoring the development of Tropical Cyclone Alfred and its potential impact on Logan and the South East Queensland region. While it is still too early to determine the full extent of any possible effects, please be assured that the College is actively tracking the cyclone’s trajectory and making the necessary preparations.
The safety and wellbeing of our students, staff and families remain our highest priority. We are staying up to date with Queensland Government directives and liaising with relevant authorities regarding necessary precautionary measures which may also include the potential for school closures.

Safety Reminders- If conditions around your home change and it is unsafe to travel to the College, please do not attempt to return until it is safe to do so. If students need to be collected earlier, please arrange to collect your child/ren through our Student Services Team.

- With strong winds expected, please remain vigilant for fallen branches or debris when on campus.
