From Years 1 to 5, students at JPC engage in developmentally appropriate learning that builds strong literacy and numeracy skills while supporting social and emotional growth. As students progress through Primary School, they deepen their critical thinking, research and problem-solving skills through transdisciplinary units of inquiry that connect learning across subjects and real-world contexts.

From First Steps to Confident Learners

Year 1​​​​​

In Year 1, students extend their Prep foundations by developing greater independence and deeper inquiry skills. A highlight is the Sharing the Planet unit, where students explore Australian habitats through a cross-curricular design project, culminating in the Year 1 Animal Expo.​

Year 2​​

Year 2 nurtures confident, curious learners through transdisciplinary inquiry and hands-on investigations. Through creative problem-solving, sustainability-focused projects and real-world applications, students strengthen scientific thinking, collaboration and global-mindedness.​

Through rich learning experiences across English, mathematics and inquiry learning, Year 3 encourages curiosity and confidence in students. Coding, design challenges and sustainability projects support creative thinking, problem-solving that spark curiosity and deepen students’ learning.​

As the first year of Upper Primary, Year 4 focuses on building essential academic and personal skills. Students strengthen research, independence and collaboration through hands-on projects, their first school camp, Junior TAS sport and the use of learning technologies.​

Year 5 prepares students for Secondary School through rich inquiry learning and the How We Organise Ourselves unit. Through Market Day and guided learning experiences, students develop analytical and critical thinking, entrepreneurship, confidence and collaboration.​

Beyond the Classroo​​m: Co-curricular Opportunities

Our Primary students enjoy a vibrant range of programs that build physical development, creativity and teamwork:
  • Performing Arts: Students can join the Choir, Cheer and Dance Programs, building confidence, coordination and performance skills while participating in school events and competitions. Read more on Performing Arts in Primary.

  • Digital Creativity: Students explore technology and innovation through coding, design and digital learning experiences, including participation in Coding Club.
As students progress through the Primary years, more opportunities become available, allowing them to further develop their interests, talents and leadership skills.
